№ 003 / Launch notes Sunfall, an iPhone app

Sunfall is live on the App Store.

The app I built to learn the iPhone publishing process is now available. It tells you when the light turns golden, where it will fall, and what the moon is doing.

Sunfall brings the sun, moon, and changing light into one view.

A small app, all the way through.

When I wrote the original build notes, Sunfall was built and tested, but it was still waiting for the last steps of the App Store process. That part is finished. You can now download it from the App Store.

I started this project to learn the whole path from an empty folder to an app someone else could put on their phone. Keeping the scope small made it possible to finish that path. Sunfall has one job: help you understand the light where you are.

When to be there. Which way to look.

Sunfall shows sunrise, sunset, golden hour, and blue hour, with the compass bearings that tell you where the sun will rise and set. A 24-hour sky ribbon lets you drag through time and see the sun's path continue into the moon's.

The moon view includes its phase, how much is lit, its position, and when it rises and sets. Civil, nautical, and astronomical twilight help you plan for darker skies too.

You can look ahead to another date, save places, and see each location's times in its own time zone. An optional reminder gives you thirty minutes' notice before evening golden hour.

It keeps working without a signal.

The sun and moon calculations run on the iPhone. There is no account to create, no subscription, and no advertising or tracking in the app.

Searching for a place by name uses Apple's geocoding service and needs a connection. Once a place is saved, its calculations work offline. The privacy policy explains how location is used.

Try Sunfall.

Sunfall is available for iPhone with iOS 17 or later. It costs $4.99 USD in the US App Store, paid once, with no in-app purchases.

The project page has screenshots and more detail. The build notes cover the development process, including the bugs that independent checks caught before release.
